DDR6, explained

DDR6 is the successor to DDR5 — and as of August 2026, its desktop/server specification is still not finalized. JEDEC, the standards body that defines every DDR generation, has published the mobile half of the next generation (LPDDR6, in July 2025) but is still refining the timing and signaling parameters of DDR6 proper. Anyone selling you "DDR6 RAM" today is selling you something that does not exist.

What's actually published vs. what's reported

The one concrete artifact of the DDR6 era so far is JESD209-6 — the LPDDR6 standard, published by JEDEC on July 9, 2025. It's real, it's final, and first devices arrive in 2026: a new 24-bit channel built as two 12-bit sub-channels, with roughly double the effective bandwidth of LPDDR5X. Desktop DDR6 is a different document on a different timeline. The numbers you see in headlines — 8,800 MT/s starting speeds, 17,600 MT/s ceilings — come from pre-ratification industry disclosures, not a published standard. They're credible as targets and quoted here as targets, nothing more. The specs page separates the two categories line by line.

Still unknown The final ratification date; launch speeds actually validated by platform vendors; which CPU generation ships the first consumer DDR6 memory controller; whether early modules use CAMM2-style form factors or classic DIMMs first. When these land, this page's date moves.

If you're building a PC this year

The honest answer for 2026 builders: DDR5 is the platform, and it's a good one. Prices are at generational lows, 128–192GB configurations are attainable, and nothing DDR6 ships in the next ~18 months will run on a socket you can buy today. If your workload is local AI, memory capacity and bandwidth on DDR5 matter more than waiting — start at best DDR5 for local AI and why bandwidth gates LLM inference.
