Skip DDR5 and wait for DDR6?
For almost everyone: no. This site exists to track DDR6, so take it from the enthusiasts: waiting is the wrong call unless your purchase window already extends past 2027. Here's the decision, run honestly.
What waiting actually costs
Choosing to wait is choosing all four of these, stacked:
- Time without the machine. Consumer DDR6 is realistically 2027+ (the gate sequence). If the computer would earn its keep — work, local AI, anything — that's a year-plus of forgone value, which no spec bump repays.
- Launch pricing. New DRAM generations open at a steep premium to the outgoing one (the price page has the DDR5 curve). Year-one DDR6 will cost dramatically more per gigabyte than year-four DDR5.
- Launch speeds. First kits ship near the bottom of the range — ~8,800 MT/s targets against mature DDR5 kits already at 8,000+. The headline doubling arrives years into the generation, not at launch.
- Rev-1 platforms. First-generation memory controllers and boards carry the compatibility churn every transition has (DDR5's early days included training-time and stability growing pains that took a platform cycle to iron out).
The two exceptions
- Your upgrade cycle already lands in 2027+. Then you're not "waiting" — you're just on schedule. Buy DDR6 when it's real.
- You're provisioning bandwidth-bound servers at fleet scale. Enterprise DDR6 lands first, and fleet math is a different article entirely.
If you build today
DDR5 in 2026 is what you want a memory platform to be: mature controllers, stable high-speed kits, real capacity (128–192GB attainable), and a used/board ecosystem. If local AI is part of the plan, get the memory decision right — it's the component that gates token speed: start with best DDR5 for local AI and the 128 vs 192GB question.

Machines you can buy beat machines you can't. Build DDR5 now; let DDR6's early
adopters pay the launch tax; upgrade into DDR6 when it's boring.
